General question*: why don’t more adventuring parties start with horses? I think I want to give my next character a horse.
*If you do this, great! It’s uncommon enough TO ME that I feel like asking the question. Keep that in mind if you choose to engage. And of course, YMMV as both GM and player. If your players don’t want horses, don’t try to force them on the party. If not everyone in the party wants horses, consider what that means for the players who do and how the way they travel will be affected. Communicate!

ALSO ALSO: I’m sure there are homebrew rules for this somewhere in the world, but consider leveling up the horses for players serious about them. Horses are smart-ish, and could learn to keep a safe distance from combat when it’s engaged. Don’t keep them as JUST pack animals. hi, i'm still thinking about horses.
i think the top 2 reasons for no party horses in my thread this morning were:
– expensive/1st-levels don't get enough for a horse
– dungeon logistics/can't take a horse into a dungeonmy counter points for these are as follows:

2. yes, our large toenail-walking beasts of burden can't fit in dungeons and that's sad, but here's the thing. parties are hardly ever the first group to set foot in this dungeon, are they? why can't there be camp remains and a roughshod hitching post nearby?

We used to tie up our horses outside dungeons. We lost so. Many. Horses.
I think the desiccated husks left by the desert wraiths were the worst. One of our group just added sequential numerals to the horse's names. I think he was up to "Daisy XIII"
