@JeremyECrawford with the amount of classes and races available to players it makes it difficult to surprise players as a DM. Any suggestions other than implementing restrictions?

Here are some of my favorite ways to surprise players: twists in the story, moments of unexpected emotion, places of otherworldly wonder, and jolts of beauty or humor or horror.
I find mechanical surprises are rarely as memorable or satisfying as story surprises. #DnD https://t.co/PD8eHgUGkq

If I can ask, what do you mean by many classes making it difficult to surprise players? In what ways would you like them to be suprised?
In what ways do the classes prevent surprise if you dont mind me asking? I’m not sure I understand how they make it difficult to surprise the players.
