You as a DM are better at improv than you give yourself credit for. You improvise all kinds of shit: Names, details, reactions, effects to success, complications for failure, dialog. I bet there's something in there you're actually pretty good at improvising.

On Thursday, as a DM, I had to roleplay being a squirrel and had to make up what he could have seen because the ranger cast speak to animals for the first time. It does come easier the more you do it and the more you understand your world.

Whenever my players want to talk to a plant or animal, I just think What Would The Muppets Do? One of my favorite parts of DMing. One of my players has a Raven familiar and both their Intelligence scores are 9 so I have the raven call him Birdbrain.
